89th Annual Messiah to Be Finale

Since 1916, the Independence Messiah Choir has brought Handel's Messiah to audiences in Independence, Missouri. The choir's concerts have also been experienced by millions across North America, since 1930 via radio and since 1966 via television, and its special performances have been praised in such venues as the sold-out Carnegie Hall in New York City (2000).

Saturday, November 19, will be the final performance of the Independence Messiah Choir. The concert will be held at 8:00 p.m. in the spectacular 6,000-seat Community of Christ Auditorium under the baton of conductor Arnold Epley. Soloists will be soprano Paulette Votava Resch, alto Martha Hart, tenor William Hite, and baritone Gerard Sundberg.

It is truly celebratory that annual performances of the Independence Messiah Choir--a community choir sponsored by the church--have shared the gospel of Jesus Christ and reached out to lovers of Handel's famous oratorio for nearly nine decades. However, the overall cultural decline in support for fine arts has been reflected in diminishing ticket sales during the last several years of these annual Independence
Messiah performances. The financial implications, coupled with demands on church staff for this major annual production, have led to the decision by the Community of Christ to celebrate the 89th performance as the Independence Messiah Choir's finale.

Tickets for the final celebration of this great tradition will go on sale August 1. Prices will be $32, 24, 18, 12, and 8, and will be available through Central Ticket Office at (816) 235-6222.

Community of Christ does express an ongoing commitment to sharing its sacred spaces and magnificent organs with the community. The Auditorium and Temple will continue to serve as venues for fine arts programs to which all are invited.

You can continue to enjoy the 300-voice Independence Messiah Choir's 85th anniversary performance of Handel's Messiah for years to come on video ($19.99) and compact disc (2 CD set: $24.99). Order yours from Herald House by calling 1-800-767-8181.
